Introduced into the CORGI range in 1967 – after the Bat Boat appeared in the previous year’s Batman movie – the problem of hitching the iconic boat to CORGI’s original 1966 Batmobile (which didn’t have a tow-hook) was solved by a small plastic sleeve that fitted neatly over the Batmobile’s turbo exhaust. Based on CORGI’s existing Dolphin 20 Cabin Cruiser on a die-cast trailer (that was hitched to a Buick Riviera in Gift Set 31), the early CORGI Bat Boat can be distinguished from the later ‘Whizzwheels-era’ version by the graphics and Batman logo on the fin, flame graphics on the sides of the hull and a beacon cage between the Batman and Robin figures.

This special premium collector set brings together three versions of the most famous model car ever produced by CORGI to celebrate our 70th anniversary - the Aston Martin DB5. Released in 1965, the 261 was based on a DB4 body and famously painted gold to tie into the film ‘Goldfinger.’ The 270 arrived in 1968 painted in Silver with additional action features from the film. The 2026 ‘Final Edition’ refines the body further and adds correctly colour components.

The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on Saturday 6th May 2023 marks a significant moment in the history of the United Kingdom. His mother Queen Elizabeth II served as the longest reigning monarch in British history, loved and respected around the world for the seventy years she sat as Head of State. For many members of the population of the United Kingdom, this is the first time they will have witnessed the Coronation of a new monarch, with all of the attendant pageantry and traditions that come with it. King Charles III’s Coronation is only the third Coronation of an English monarch to take place on a Saturday; the first was King Harold II on January 6th 1066, who was also the last Anglo-Saxon monarch. Harold was notably the first monarch to be crowned at Westminster Abbey in London; the Abbey has been preserved as the traditional venue for Coronations ever since. All previous special commemorative Royal die-cast bus models produced by Corgi have used the iconic Classic Routemaster; for the first time, and to mark the beginning of a new chapter in our nation’s history, this model uses the modern New Routemaster to celebrate His Majesty’s Coronation. As the youngster who would become King said in 1954: “There is nothing nicer in the world than a bus.”

Applying to join the Fleet Air Arm at just 18 years old, Canadian pilot Donald Sheppard made his first operational sorties in support of Britain’s attempts to destroy the German battleship Tirpitz at the end of March 1944. He was aboard his home carrier HMS Victorious as she later traded the icy waters of the North Sea for a new assignment in the Far East, where the Indian Ocean saw Sheppard develop from a talented novice pilot into an air ace, one of only two Canadian Navy aces and the Fleet Air Arm’s only Corsair ace of the Second World War. During a hectic period of combat flying in the Indian Ocean, Sheppard was credited with at least four aerial victories, plus a couple more claimed as damaged, shared or probable. One of these victories saw him engaged in a lengthy combat with a Japanese fighter, which saw him giving chase to the enemy aircraft for over 20 miles at 20,000 feet. Once in shooting range, he fired on the enemy aircraft which almost immediately exploded in a ball of flame. However, Sheppard was flying so fast that he didn’t have time to take evasive action and his Corsair flew through the flaming debris, burning his aircraft’s tail and elevators. Thankfully, he managed to nurse his fighter back to HMS Victorious without further incident.

Corgi is proud to present a brand new Aviation Archive tooling the Curtiss P-40B Warhawk/Tomahawk. The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is not generally regarded as one of the most accomplished fighters of the Second World War, but it is difficult to think of a more important aircraft for both Britain and America in the months following the end of the Battle of Britain. At a time when both Britain and France were desperate for as many modern monoplane fighters they could lay their hands on, the Curtiss P-40 was arguably the best aircraft the Americans had available and they allowed the French (this order was ultimately transferred to Britain) and British to order the fighter in large numbers. The P-40 was quick and easy to manufacture and allowed nations already in combat with Axis forces to obtain large numbers of new, modern fighters, enabling them to continue fighting on many fronts and buying them much needed time until the incredible industrial might of America could be brought to bear. For the British and Commonwealth Desert Air Forces, the Curtiss P-40, which they christened 'Tomahawk , proved to be a critically important aircraft and they were the first to take the P-40 into combat during June 1941. Being rugged and reliable, the RAF P-40s were a dogged adversary for Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica units even though many Tomahawks were lost in combat, they took a heavy toll of Axis aircraft. Following an extremely late night at the Squadron Christmas party the day previously, USAAF pilots George Welch and Kenneth Taylor woke to the sound of explosions and low flying aircraft. The date was 7th December 1941 and the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor was under attack. Still wearing their mess dress from the previous night, the men rang ahead to Wheeler Field, where their Squadron had been deployed for gunnery practice and instructed ground crews to prepare two P40 fighters for flight. Driving their Buick at high speed and coming under fire from Japanese aircraft, the men arrived at Wheeler and immediately made for their aircraft, taking off beneath waves of attacking enemy aircraft. The two pilots fought valiantly against overwhelming odds, even landing to re-fuel and re-arm, only to take off and fight again. During a frantic few minutes, Welch destroyed four enemy aircraft, with Taylor accounting for at least a further two. For their heroic actions during the Pearl Harbor attack, George Welch and Kenneth Taylor were both awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

The Curtiss P-40 series of fighters may not be regarded amongst the most successful of WWII, but as Europe fell to the advancing Wehrmacht and Britain and her Commonwealth fought to stem the German tide, it is difficult to think of a more important aircraft on both sides of the Atlantic. A capable and well-built fighter, the Curtiss P-40 was easy to maintain and operate and relatively cheap to produce. Crucially, it was in full scale production by the time WWII began. Despite the fact that the Curtiss P-40 was one of the most advanced American fighters in service at the outbreak of WWII, it would be the Royal Air Force that gave the aircraft its combat introduction. Early RAF Tomahawks (the British name for the P-40B) were not deemed suitable for fighter operations against the Luftwaffe and were initially used in Army cooperation and reconnaissance roles, operating from bases in the UK. The RAF made a number of suggestions to Curtiss following their experiences with these early machines and a number of improvements were incorporated into the next aircraft deliveries. This resulted in the Desert Air Force receiving Tomahawks in 1941 as replacements for their Hurricanes and being hurled into battle against Axis air forces. It was also in the desert that the RAF Tomahawks became some of the most famous aircraft of the entire war, as No.112 Squadron pilots painted sinister looking sharks teeth and eyes behind the propellers of their P-40s, giving the aircraft an extremely aggressive appearance. The profile of these early RAF Tomahawks really does resemble that of a shark, a fact that was fully exploited by the pilots of the Desert Air Force. Impressed by magazine pictures of these RAF flying sharks, the famous American Volunteer Group 'Flying Tigers soon added sharks teeth designs to their own P-40s as they battled Japanese aircraft in the skies above China. This particular Curtiss Tomahawk was the mount of famous RAF pilot Neville Duke, who was posted to No.112 Squadron in North Africa following a successful spell as Wing Commander 'Sailor Malan's' wingman at Biggin Hill. Used to flying the Spitfire Mk.V, Duke initially found the Tomahawk to be something of a disappointment in combat and was shot down twice during his first few weeks in the desert. Flying Tomahawk IIB AK402, he was shot down on 30th November 1941 by high scoring JG27 ace Otto Schulz, but managed to crash land his aircraft and return to his Squadron. He soon got to grips with the desert air war and started to score victories of his own by the end of the war, Duke became the highest scoring Allied ace in the Mediterranean Theatre with 27 victories to his name. We also went on to become a celebrated test pilot and holder of the world air speed record.
